Using Massachusetts Justice Of The Peace To Get Married

By Nita McKinney

A Justice of the Peace official will perform many duties that a court appointed judge does, but will have limited power when compared to a judge. Every state and jurisdiction has different rules as to what the duties of a Justice of the Peace officer are. The Massachusetts Justice of the Peace Association has dedicated itself to making sure that all officials perform their duties in a professional and respectful manner.

The organizations has built its foundations around ethics and values. They are not in business for profit and came to be in 1975. In the state, the main duties performed by Justice of the Peace has to do with marriage issues.

When two people want to tie the knot, they will naturally have to apply for a marriage license. To do this, both of them must present themselves at the town clerk's office and show proof that they are both 18 years old. It is possible to get married if under 18 but there are some extra steps to take that they will let a person know about.

Once the marriage license is granted, the couple can get married in any part of the state. It is mandatory that this license is obtained in order for an official to solemnize a wedding. It should be known that there does not have to be any witnesses in order for a marriage to be valid. The simple presence of an officiant is sufficient enough for a marriage to be legal.

Once a couple has been officially married, the officiant will have to fill out information on the certificate. It will then be returned to the original place that the coupe applied for it. There is no time limit that the officiant has to return the certificate. For this reason, the couple should talk to the officiant and ask how long he or she usually takes to return it. When it is ready, the couple will be notified that they can go and pick it up.

An officiant is permitted to perform a marriage ceremony in any part of the state. There are no specific words that need to be repeated by the bride or groom in order for their marriage to be valid. All that matters is that they say something that agrees with the understanding that they are now bound as man and wife. The officiant must also end the ceremony with a pronouncement of the couple now being man and wife.

When looking for a Justice of the Peace, it is important for a couple to find one who fits their style. This is because every single one will have their own particular style of the way they do things. Some are more flexible in providing what a couple wants than others. A search can begin by contacting the Secretary of State's Office.

When a Massachusetts Justice of the Peace is appointed, they serve for seven years. They're primary role is to serve in the city in which they reside in. It is set up so that for every 5000 residents there is, there will be one Justice of the Peace official. A humongous city would therefore have many.
