Planning a Wedding

By Amanda Kirby

When he got down on one knee, you said yes. Where do you go from here? If you want the wedding of your dreams, you have a lot of work ahead of you. As you plan your big day, you will be more likely to stay cool and calm with the following tips.

Make the Announcement

Announcing your wedding is now more simple than ever. Unless you really want to, you no longer need to go to the effort of a formal newspaper announcement. It's now as simple as tweeting your message and the whole world will know about your wedding.

While we all want a chance to have our family and friends fuss over us, there are other reasons to tell people about your wedding. But it also lets your friends and family prepare for the event as well. Everyone has scheduling issues, clothes and presents to buy, skin to tan, and weight to lose. Get Started on the Planning Straight Away

As a new bride-to-be, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and expect that the world revolves around you alone. But thousands of other women will also be feeling like they are the only bride-to-be in the world as well. That means that you will all be competing for the wedding venue, caterers, dresses, flowers, and the rest of the works. So if you want to make sure to get your first choices, make sure to start planning early.

Getting Organized

It's fine to tell a bride to plan ahead, but many people have no idea how to do it. The first step should be a visit to your local stationery store, where you can purchase a hard-wearing notebook or journal. Make sure the notebook is one that you are happy with, and isn't going to fall apart after regular use. After your wedding you'll want to keep it tucked away with your garter and a piece of wedding cake. It can also be nice to buy a special pen to use.

The notebook is going to be your single source for all things wedding. This is where you will keep phone numbers, websites, and email addresses for caterers, hotels, florists, bridal shops, friends and family. Important information like your future mother-in-law's dress size and the special needs of your bridal party should also be recorded in your notebook. Although you may be tempted to simply record this information in your PDA or cell phone, just remember that these electronic items have a shelf life. Once the battery has been depleted or lost, all of your memories will be gone as well.

If you're thinking that this all seems like a lot of useless work, just wait until that frantic moment, days before your wedding day, when you need to get in touch with the caterer or florist and have no idea where you put his card. More than anything else, your notebook will become your fail-proof bridezilla prevention tool. Communicate Effectively

Good communication works two ways. First, it is about making sure that you deliver your message clearly. Second, it involves making sure that the other party understands what you've said. To make sure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to your wedding, make sure to get everything in writing. Whenever you get a quote for work or a promise of delivery, make sure your vendor gives you a receipt. Keep all of your receipts and quotes in your faithful notebook. As the wedding day approaches, contact your vendors to make sure that they are still on track for delivery. Make sure to get confirmation in writing. The best way to handle this is to follow up via email.
