With almost 20 years experience as a DJ I've had many exceptional experiences. I've been lucky enough to DJ at many notable venues and occasions not least the Mayor's Ball or work functions for some of the counties largest employers. However, as of this time I'm just as inclined in taking a step back and coaching young, aspiring DJ's too. That is the basis of this write-up.
Just a few years ago now I chose a new career challenge. I started work as a youth counselor, helping teenagers on their first, tentative steps on the jobs ladder. Aged between 16 to 18, these teens are classed by authorities as 'NEETS' also known as 'Not in Education, Employment or Training'. In this job role I was there to allocate educational programs or job programs for youngsters. I was there to cajole and inspire.
It was a natural career progression then, for me to mentor aspiring DJ's. How do I do this? Put simply DJ's accompany me at a number of gigs until they've developed enough confidence and experience. Once I've deemed they're able to control the room I allocate them work. The buzz I once experienced as a DJ is matched only by the fulfillment I experience in watching youths achieve their own dreams.
The program my students graduate through involves both the right competencies and the right legal requirements. Being fully insured and having your equipment PAT Tested are two requirements of a professional. A family friend indulging their hobby and professionally trained DJ offer a world of difference in this respect. I've always fully valued the need to meet the required professional checks and balances and convey this to our DJ's.
