Crazy Italian Wedding Traditions Revealed By Priscila Siano

When you think of Italy, it's impossible not to think of romance.

From the moment you hear the word Italy, it's thoughts of the Italian Riviera, Venice, Rome and of course romance. But have you ever considered having an Italian marriage or even dating in Italy?

It's natural for many people to visit the country with their loved ones or alone in the hope of finding love. Just as you do with any international city that you plan to visit for a wedding, getting to know local wedding traditions can help you make a good impression.

If your single what about dating at the wedding?

It may sound exciting, but that depends on what your goals are. Even though, Italians are known for their love of romance; they're still conservative when it comes time to settling down.

Like many other parts of the world Italians look at the whole package when it comes to deciding on a partner.

Italian dating traditions dictate that men be chivalrous along with being well to do. Women are expected to look good and be adept at managing the home. What you have to know about Italian men is that they are often coddled by their mothers and a lady will have to learn to deal with that in a diplomatic manner.

For Women - Forewarned is forearmed. So ladies if you're just out for a fun vacation with no strings you've come to the right place. Many Italian men are happy to accommodate you. But if you're looking for a long term relationship and you think your roll in the hay will eventually take you there... That's not going to happen. Italian men are notoriously conservative. So in their mind you're either a good girl or a bad girl. They marry good girls and have affairs with bad girls. Just something to think about :-)

For Men - Even today, the family of an Italian woman will alwaysbelooking into the background of a man that she is seriously interested in. Being chivalrous and being sensitive to the needs of a woman can take you a long way.

Time to turn on the charm. Italian women love being praised for their beauty, and one should not hold back on their praise. Being able to express your feelings is something a bride would look for in a man.

You'd think with all the exposure to today's values that the traditions of the past would be disappearing. That's certainly not the case.

Weddings - The celebrations will be different in Rome then they'll be in Naples. Different parts of Italy celebrate the traditions and customs surrounding the wedding experience differently.

For example, in Veneto it is part of the Italian marriage traditions that before the wedding the couple has to walk to the church or chapelwherethey are getting married.

Tradition says that watching the couple handle these unexpected surprises will give you (and them) an insight into how their married relationship will go through their life. Other locations will simply place the obstacles around the church. The goal is the same, to see just how the couple reacts to adversity. It's an interesting concept and loosely based on scientific fact.

Some couples tie a ribbon together at the chapel as a symbol of their bond together. The ring is gently placed on the left ring finger. This is to signify and symbolize traditional love and commitment. As part of Italian traditions in some places, the groom is expected to carry a piece of iron in his pocket. (This is to keep evil spirits at bay.)A veil covers the bride's face to protect her from jealous spirits. If it tears it's considered bad luck. Many carry a duplicate in their satin bag.

According to the older traditions of an Italian marriage, you cannot get married during Lent or in the period of Advent as well as in May or August. However, getting married on a Sunday is believed to be the best day.

Pomp, circumstance, tradition, and then PARTY! Occasionally the celebration can go on for days. It all starts with the wedding early in the day. It's the reception though that can go on for days. Lot's of food, wine and dancing. Ultimately it all depends on the bride (it's her day) so plan accordingly... just in case.

My 2 favorite parts of Italian weddings are the party and the cake. Normally these cakes are the biggest part of the event. Huge, ornamental and delicious. The traditional wedding is one of the largest celebrations in Italian culture. So if, you are attending or planning on being in one, bring your dancing shoes and a big appetite.

The Italian culture and Italian weddings are steeped in history and romance.

The more you know about the traditions and customs associated with an Italian wedding the more fun you'll have at the wedding and certainly at the reception.
