Shaky Experiences with Funny Speeches

By Rob Sutter

Sometimes people would sooner accept death than the possibility of talking in front of large crowds. I may not take things to such extremes but I am not the first person to jump at the chance to be on stage. I don't like the thought of tripping over my words when talking to a group while they watch me with expressions that show no amusement. Funny speeches are ones which I had taken part in but aren't ones that showed off my strengths.

I am a naturally shy person, which doesn't really help the situation much. I don't speak much but when I do, I try to make everything I say matter. This is a problem for someone who is tasked with speaking in front of groups because in order to be effective, you can't be afraid of having a series of eyeballs focused on you. The honest truth is that you have to be able to let go of your fears and simply cut loose, even though the situation may be daunting.

There may be jokes that I believed were humorous but others may not have been able to see the humor. I like being sarcastic with my jokes, allowing certain things to fly under the radar and let others see the humor for themselves without being loud about it. I don't mean to be literal when I say something but rather I say it with a hint of playfulness. It's not a form of humor that everyone understands, though, which calls for certain adjustments.

Funny speeches still seem somewhat foreign to me but to say that I hadn't learned would be a lie. In fact, companies like Laugh Staff have experts which can probably tell how much a person has grown as a speaker. I feel like I've gained a better understanding on different types of humor and being able to tell jokes without confining myself to a certain type of humor. I may not speak on television in the future but learning how to talk in front of groups has been invaluable.

Being able to talk in front of groups has been, to say the least, a challenging experience and one that I've learned from despite that. Sometimes you have to see where you are failing at in order to get better and there were definitely areas that I needed work in. Luckily, I was able to figure them out and be able to see which changes were for the better. While speaking to large groups is still somewhat scary, at least now I have knowledge to help me out.
