Modeling 101: Choosing A Fashion Photographer

By Mark Ferguson

Getting into the modeling business is a tough job. And the most important part of getting your pictures taken is probably the person behind the camera. When choosing a fashion photographer, picking someone that takes good pictures and won't cause you problems are very important. Here are some tips for new models:

Look at their portfolio. The work that they do is the most important part of the whole process. Make sure that you choose a photographer that can not only take a good picture, but can take a variety of them. This includes many different styles of pictures with many models. It also includes creative shots, like experimentation with different angles.

Talk to your options. Meet the people who will potentially be taking your picture. Make sure that you choose someone that you like and will be comfortable working with. If you prefer a certain gender to do lingerie and swimwear, go with that preference.

Payment is another matter to consider when deciding on the individual, but it is secondary. Most will pay you at least some money. If they want you to pay them, then it would be best to choose a different person. If you prefer a person that pays a little less than another, then go with the one you like best as a new model. You will have time to choose higher paying options later.

Make sure you can keep your pictures. If an independent person wants rights to your pictures, then it is best to go with someone else. You should have rights to post or display your pictures in any way you want until you work with a modeling agency. When you work with an agency, it will be a different story.

Choosing wisely when choosing a fashion photographer is a very important part of your modeling career, especially when building your portfolio. Choose a talented individual that can do you justice, but make sure you like them. Pay is not always the primary factor this early, but don't pay them. And make sure you get to keep your pictures. These tips should aid you in finding the right option for you.
