Capturing An Ephemeral Moment

By Lauren Davis

For years, amber has been valued for its elegance and exquisiteness, and how every piece has a certain air of mystery about it. This fossilized tree sap came to existence when hundreds of years in the past, an early insect mistakenly wanders into a drop of tree resin and becomes enveloped in the thick substance, forever preserving its small frame in the hardened semi-transparent matter.

Amber is seen as unlike all the other semi precious gems because aside from having a distinctive brownish-red color that emanates from the translucent material, the small insects that are occasionally found entombed inside it have been so beautifully preserved that they seem like they can spring back to life at any given instant, as if they have just been in suspended animation.

Amber may simply be mother nature's unique means of creating a memoir that will permit us to have a glimpse of our distant past, back when the world was still young and when countless prehistoric animals roamed its unforgiving terrain.

Today, we usually do not need fossils and hardened tree sap just to form lasting tokens of the past, we now have access to the technology that have given us the art of photography. All you have to do now is snap a photograph and you will have instantly preserved a tiny piece of your life. The resulting image acts as a link to the past that enables you to go back to that precise point in time, that split second when the snapshot was taken, and preserve that memory forever.

When it comes to those memories that we want to preserve with the help of pictures, we tend to lean towards those instances that have a lasting significance for us. This is why maternity photography, baby photography, and graduation photography are among the most popular categories of photo shoots, because these concern some of the most significant moments in one's lifetime, these are the instances that signify the beginning of a new chapter in our lives, and who would not want to keep a lasting memory of that?
