Whether its House, Electro or Classical, We Explore the History of Music Genres

By Brian MacDonald

Music has been bringing people together for hundreds of years; in fact even before language was conceived, music in its rawest form was used as a means of communication. So many different kinds of music exist today and each one has many connotations.

One of the most popular genres of music today, is known as house music. It revolves around a heavy background beat overcut with samples, sounds and very often vocals. It has its roots in Chicago, USA and moved to Europe in the 1980s where it was adopted and reworked into the kind of house music we hear today. Some of the most popular house producers are based in Europe and it has become so revered that thousands flock to destinations such as Ibiza to see house DJs perform. There are many kinds of house, each type appeals to a different demographic; funky house for instance is more popular among 30-somethings and electro house, with it's strange samples seems to have gained notoriety among teens and those in their twenties.

Pop music is so named because of its popularity and consequent association with the mainstream. First seen in the 1950's it borrows trends from other music genres and doesn't necessarily have it's own unique sound, for this reason it can chop and change its sound slightly. Pop music and popular music are, contrary to common belief different with popular music being derived from rock and roll originally. The appeal of pop music is to the masses, not particularly as self-expression or art.

Classical music has a much older history spanning a long period of time from the 11th century onwards until today where it is happily, still enjoyed and appreciated on a large scale. Rather than using equipment and technology to make the distinctive sound of the genre instruments commonly found in an orchestra make the live sound enjoyed and revered by so many. Within classical music itself there are many individual genres and some of the most famous composers from throughout the classical era include Beethoven, Motzart, Wagner and Bach.

Instruments working together is one thing, but sounds and beats created from nothing that manage to work together despite that is surely a talent and electro music is showcase of such talent. Electro has become a massive part of the music scene and is often experimental with its sounds. There are many who regard these sounds as just noise, but the talent it takes to build rhythm, samples, drums and occasionally vocals from a blank screen cannot be argued.

Something these forums could never argue about is rock music. Rock is rock, characterised by the guitar. It takes influence from blues music, country, metal and acoustic and a lot of the time, all these influences are used together. Rock music came from the blues originally which itself came from the black community in the old Deep South. It is seen as angry by some, but the versatility of the guitar means it's capable of being something quite beautiful. The haunting sound of the acoustic guitar is unrivalled and the passion and talent it takes to play the electric guitar well is why bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who are still touring today. The old ways are the best ways!
